ProAct to help FMC Kongsberg Subsea improve storage efficiency ProAct Systems AS in January closed a deal with Norwegian company FMC Kongsberg Subsea regarding the implementation of a large-scale storage solution. The deal is worth an estimated 4 million NOK. The solution, which is based on two fileserver F880 units from Network Appliance, will increase efficiency in the customer's storage routines. FMC Kongsberg Subsea has chosen a NAS solution (Network Attached Storage), which means that the storage is connected to a network instead of directly to the servers. - We are expecting to see benefits within several areas such as simplified administration, increased efficiency and improved performance, says Øivind Myhre, IT Manager at FMC Kongsberg Subsea. NAS solutions have proven to be a very effective tool for rationalising the storage solutions in distributed organisations with many servers and the administration problems that follow. In a TCO study (Total Cost of Ownership) made by the research firm INPUT recently, NAS solutions turned out to provide by far the best return on investment. The main factors for the low TCO were the stability and ease of administration. - Many more organisations should evaluate NAS solutions. In Norway, it is mostly the telecom-, media-, banking- and oil industry that has understood the benefits of a NAS solution. We are puzzled about why the software companies do not investigate how much money they could save by using networked attached storage as compared to server attached.
