Sörmland County Council saving time and money with more efficient backup

With the help of archive and storage specialists Proact, Sörmland County Council has managed to implement 80 per cent savings thanks to snapshot backup and deduplication.

Sörmland County Council turned to Proact when effective ways were needed for handling the time-consuming backup process and improving disaster protection and uptime. The solution: backup using snapshot technology, a method which could be integrated and operate alongside the councils existing IT environment. Snapshot technology involves taking snapshots, instantaneous images, of files and systems which are then saved as virtual copies.

This solution uses deduplication of primary storage to ensure that the same information is not stored several times over, thereby saving plenty of space. The promise of 35 per cent savings has been exceeded by a wide margin, and Sörmland County Council has achieved savings in excess of 80 per cent in some respects. The new solution also means that the county council no longer needs backup software, software which used to involve major licensing costs on a regular basis.

One of the biggest advantages of the technologies is that backups and recovery take just a minute or so to implement, instead of the several hours required by traditional technology.

The new system has considerably simplified our backup processes. We used to be able to perform one backup per day, but now we run several backups automatically throughout the day, says Johan

Isacsson, operations manager at Sörmland County Council.

With more regular backups, the county council is not running the risk of losing information if their systems go down, and recovery is also facilitated. Locating and recreating specific files is also a lot more straightforward and has enabled the county council to save a lot of time. We can liken the old system to a cassette player, while the new system is more like an MP3 player. Trying to find individual tracks is much quicker using the new technology, says Andreas Sidén, client manager at Proact.
