Scania logging truck with Allison automatic transmission keeps the tow truck away
BOLLEBYGD, SWEDEN – J G Andersson and Sons in Linneryd is a privately-owned sawmill with a long history. JGA was started back in 1928 and is owned today by the third generation of Anderssons. When JGA decided to buy its own logging truck, the choice of transmission was not negotiable: it had to be equipped with a fully automatic transmission. So, in May 2009 JGA bought a Scania R480 with an Allison 4500 Series automatic transmission. "We started to drive longer trips to collect logs in the area where a huge storm (Gudrun) had destroyed the forest," says Carl-Gustaf Johansson, manager at JGA. "We have extensive experience driving vehicles with fully automatic transmissions, and to choose something else was not an option for us. Thanks to the Allison fully automatic, we save a lot of time and have achieved a very efficient operation. Our new logging truck is able to manoeuvre easily on slippery forest roads, conditions in which other trucks with manual transmissions and AMTs have to be towed." "We ordered the Scania with a six speed GA867 (Allison 4500) fully automatic at the Scania dealer, Atteviks in Växjö. Our request to equip a logging truck with a fully automatic transmission was evidently unusual, and it has attracted a lot of attention. We didn't know this was a special request at that time. We only wanted a fully automatic, and we knew, it would be much more convenient to drive and less stressful for the driver," says Peter Johansson, at J G Andersson and Sons. "From the outside this truck looks the same as other logging trucks. But it is under the cab where you find the difference. The Allison fully automatic transmission changes gears so smoothly. You can have full turbo pressure from the beginning and full pulling power during the gearshifts. When you are about to start a 60 ton log truck on an icy or muddy forest road, you notice the difference," says Johansson. "We also chose a 480 hp engine with Euro 5 to get a lighter front end and to keep the total weight down. It really works great together with the Allison transmission. And thanks to the Allison fully automatic transmission, we save a lot of time in not having to wait for any tow truck to come and help us." About Allison Transmission, Inc. Allison Transmission, Inc.
