RMD trains staff ahead of testing with Indonesia’s KAI
As previously communicated, Railway Metrics and Dynamics (RMD) is collaborating with the state-owned railway company PT Kereta Api Indonesia (KAI) to carry out Proof of Concept tests of RMD’s technology for real-time monitoring of infrastructure and rolling stock. RMD has now trained staff from its Indonesian partner Artindo to support the upcoming tests. The next step is a workshop with KAI in Bandung on 23 July.
About the railway initiative
Indonesia is investing heavily in its railway system. Existing lines are being expanded, new routes planned, and the high-speed line from Bandung is being extended all the way to Surabaya on Java’s eastern coast. As part of this effort, KAI is also looking to introduce proactive maintenance, having identified that large savings can be made here. At the same time, proactive maintenance increases both safety and reliability – something that’s needed if freight trains are to relieve pressure on the country’s heavily burdened road system.
Background
In 2024, RMD was selected for Business Sweden’s Catalyst programme, which led to a partnership with the Indonesian company Artindo in July the same year. Since Indonesia’s railway system is almost entirely state-owned, it’s crucial to have a local partner with the right contacts to reach the relevant decision-makers.
The first meeting between RMD and KAI was held in Bandung in September 2024. During the meeting, RMD demonstrated its sensors and AI-based systems, followed by a discussion on how the technology could contribute to more efficient railway operations across the country.
The Bandung meeting resulted in a decision to carry out Proof of Concept tests of RMD’s technology, together with a complementary solution from Swedish Axis Communications for monitoring engine temperature using thermal cameras.
Training of RMD’s partner Artindo
Recently, Pak Fadilla – founder and owner of Artindo – visited RMD’s office in Stockholm for a full day of technical briefings. The focus was on giving a detailed understanding of how RMD’s solutions work in practice, with special emphasis on the PMU sensor. The goal was to give Artindo enough technical knowledge to independently handle both installation and demonstration – but also to actively contribute to future discussions ahead of the next step: a paid evaluation of RMD’s products.
Workshop planned
On 23 July, the parties will meet again at KAI’s headquarters in Bandung. Representatives from KAI’s Rolling Stock, Maintenance and Safety division will participate, along with delegates from RMD, Artindo, Axis Communications and Business Sweden.
The purpose of the workshop is to define the structure of the upcoming tests in detail. This includes identifying the key performance indicators to be measured, outlining the technical requirements, and agreeing on how the results will be evaluated afterwards.
– It’s encouraging to now enter the next phase of our collaboration with KAI. We received very positive feedback on our demo last autumn, and now we’re preparing for actual Proof of Concepts. We believe our technology fits well with the Indonesian market, so this is an exciting step, says Jan Lindqvist, CEO of Railway Metrics and Dynamics.
– The workshop is the next important step towards conducting Proof of Concept tests. By involving key personnel from KAI, we can identify and meet specific needs – and ensure that our solution is tailored to the Indonesian railway environment. The outcome will provide valuable insights into how RMD can scale up in the Indonesian market, concludes Jan Lindqvist.
