RaySearch Laboratories AB announces that the first patient in Australasia has been treated with a treatment plan created with RaySearch’s treatment planning system RayStation®. The treatment was carried out at Auckland Radiation Oncology in Auckland, New Zealand.

Auckland Radiation Oncology has established an international reputation for excellence in cancer treatment, offering the best in private healthcare. This leading radiation therapy treatment center in Auckland provides the highest standards of clinical skills with a team of experienced Radiation Oncologists, Radiation Therapists and Medical Physicists who are at the top of their profession. The first patient was treated for prostate cancer using Volumetric Modulated Arc Therapy (VMAT) and the treatment was delivered on an Elekta linear accelerator.

“For our clinic, RayStation® offers many advantages. The increased dose computational speed of the system gives us significant gains in managing our planning workload. Also, as we have treatment machines with different collimator types the use of RayStation’s fall-back planning functionality gives us more flexibility in transferring patients between the machines when required. Another highly important feature for us is dose tracking. That will allow us to fully utilize the information from the daily treatment verification imaging to account for changes in patient conditions such as weight changes to continually provide optimum treatment plans throughout the treatment regime to maximize tumor cell kill probability whilst sparing critical organs”, says Dr Bon Mzenda, Chief Physicist of Auckland Radiation Oncology.

“The team at Auckland Radiation Oncology is very competent and we are proud that we live up to their quality demands. RayStation® has been used clinically in North America and Europe for some time and now we reach the next important milestone when the system is used clinically in this region as well. We have several customers in Australia and New Zealand and see a growing interest for RayStation® in the region. We are now expanding our sales and service network and we look forward to helping Auckland Radiation Oncology and other clinics as they work hard every day to give cancer patients the best treatments possible”, says Johan Löf, CEO of RaySearch.

Dr. Mzenda concludes: “Overall we are very happy with RayStation® and RaySearch’s development team continues to do a good job in providing a planning system that promises to meet the ever-increasing challenges of modern advanced radiotherapy provision”.
