First patient treatments delivered with RayStation and Hitachi proton therapy system at Sibely Memorial Hospital
Treatment planning system RayStation® from RaySearch has been used together with Hitachi’s latest proton therapy system to treat cancer patients at the newly opened John Hopkins Proton Center at Sibley Memorial Hospital in Washington, DC, USA.
The 80,000 square-foot facility, which opened October 1, houses cutting-edge proton therapy equipment from Hitachi alongside next-generation treatment planning software from RaySearch. Three rotating gantry treatment rooms and one fixed-beam research room at the center are equipped with a full suite of digital technologies for effective proton therapy planning.
Proton therapy is a highly precise radiation treatment for tumors. It focuses more radiation on the tumor and less on the surrounding healthy tissue. This is particularly important for children, who may suffer lasting side effects from traditional cancer treatments.
Hitachi offers an extensive variety of system configurations for cancer clinics, ranging from compact single room, expandable systems to multi-treatment room configurations in addition to multi-ion accelerating capabilities. RaySearch software, designed to maximize productivity and precision throughout the treatment planning process, will continue to support Hitachi equipment – including new delivery techniques planned for the coming years.
Johan Löf, founder and CEO, RaySearch, says: “RayStation has become the unrivalled leader in proton planning and therefore the natural choice for Johns Hopkins, one of the most advanced cancer centers in the world. We will closely follow the success of RayStation in enhancing the work of the clinic’s team of highly skilled medical experts.”
