Realfiction Holding AB (“Realfiction”) announces that it has submitted patent applications for its new directional pixel technology, referred to as Project Echo. The purpose is to bring displays to market that present 3D to audiences without glasses or other lenses between the human eye and the effect and where 3D objects become solid and can be viewed and interacted with from different angles.

The technology: The new pixel technology solves problems with existing types of directional displays - such as light field displays - of high cost, low resolution, bad color reproduction, visible seams between image segments and bad viewing zones. These barriers to commercial launch and broad market adoption are solved by Realfiction’s new, now patent pending technology. More specifically, the new technology addresses specific issues in traditional directional pixels and meets extreme requirements to sub-pixel resolutions, alignment precision and internal display bandwidth.

The vision: This new technology will make it possible to watch, enjoy, use and interact with 3D effects in ways that have so far been exclusive to science fiction universes such as Iron Man, Minority Report, Star Wars, etc. Finally, fiction can become a natural part of the real world of social interaction between human beings. This is now within reach with the Project Echo pixel technology.

The use: The new technology can change a variety of industries, including Social gaming at home; Entertaining of crowds in stadiums; Experiencing in museums and amusement parks;  Learning in class rooms; Buying in car-dealerships, Imagining in travel agencies; Browsing in public areas, Creating in architecture, Visualizing in medical, Meeting for business, medical and private use and Navigating in the automotive industry. These are just some of the industries and sectors into which the technology can be applied and licensed.

The phases: Realfiction plans to announce the proof of concept this year (2019) and will announce co-development partnerships and other major developments as they occur. In its final and fully commercial form, the disruptive technology and related content effects will be available at scale and at pricepoints that enable wide scale consumer adoption (B2C). Reaching this ultimate goal is no trivial task and will be pursued in the years to come with a number of industry partners. In the meantime, it is expected that the first working products will target certain industrial (B2B) applications with very specific requirements.

The potentialAs announced earlier, Project Echo represents a 100mUSD licensing opportunity to Realfiction, due to materialize gradually, starting in 2021. Dialogue has already been initiated with major players in more of the usage sectors (ref. above) about future licensing of the technology. Considering that 10’s of billions of US dollars have been invested into AR/VR/MR in search of the right technology and application with a projected value of the combined AR market of 90bnUSD in 2022 (source: the Motley Fool) and given that the MR market alone is expected to reach 5,4bnUSD in 2024 with annual growth of 71,6% per year from 2018 (source: Allied Market Research) it is clear that the potential of Project Echo is almost limitless. However, as with all other development, it should be noted that a risk exists that the development of Project Echo may be delayed, impeded or challenged by other, currently unknown technologies.

The founders of Realfiction, CEO Clas Dyrholm and Peter Simonsen, along with Director of Advanced display technology, Steen Iversen, comment: “The Project Echo technology takes Realfiction and potentially the world into a completely new reality where fiction blends into the real world in ways that make it natural and enabling in almost every way that one can imagine. This is often referred to as the ‘holy grail of 3D’. We are very proud to have reached the very important milestone of filing the core patent applications for the technology. This means, that the formulas behind the technology have been defined, documented and protected and that we now have our grand vision of changing the world by creating Real Fiction in sight.”
