Apex Lifts installs sweet new lift for Tate & Lyle

London’s largest independent lift manufacturer, Apex Lifts, has installed a new eight floor sugar-only lift for Tate & Lyle Sugars at its iconic Thames refinery in Silvertown, East London.

The goods-only lift transports nothing but sugar up and down eight floors of the Thames refinery, which has been refining the sugar since 1878. The lift is part of a larger project to modernise a previously redundant part of the building.

“The new lift is safe, reliable and efficient, and has allowed us to reduce our carbon footprint.” explains Andrew Harvey, Project Engineer at Tate & Lyle Sugars.

Tate & Lyle Sugars is a leading name in sugar production, with a product portfolio that includes Demerara sugar, fondant icing sugar and Lyle’s Golden Syrup.

The new lift incorporates a call and send system with KAT 2 detector edges for safety. A complete new lift car sling and car interior along with safety gear & equipment has been installed. The shutter gates on each floor were also completely renewed, alongside an automatic gate at the ground floor, which can be operated by the forklift driver loading the lift. The motor room has also been moved from the 14thfloor, the roof of the building, to the 9thfloor as the top part of the building will no longer be used.

“From design, to manufacturing and through to installation, the lift project for Tate & Lyle Sugars has been challenging; it was vital to ensure heavy loads of sugar were delivered safely and efficiently throughout the building,” explains Managing Director of Apex Lifts, Warren Jenchner. “We’ve never created a sugar-only lift before!”
