17 Bexley youngsters, aged 12 to 18, with disabilities including autism, ADHD, learning difficulties and physical impairments, were able to enjoy a residential weekend away this month thanks to local charity, Bexley SNAP.

The weekend, which took place 31 May - 1 June at the PGL Activity centre in Marchants Hill, Surrey, was sponsored by Sidcup-based lift manufacturer, Apex Lifts. It saw many young people, some of whom have never previously spent a night away from home, enjoy an exciting action-packed weekend of fun activities with other children, at the same time offering the families a well-deserved break.

“The kids had a great time, they loved all the activities, especially the big swing. Over the weekend not only were new friendships developed, but some old ones reaffirmed. For example, two on the weekend were brother and sister, who live separately in long-term care, so it gave them the opportunity to spend some quality time together,” says Carol Penny, Chief Executive of Bexley SNAP.

“From choosing what food they wanted, preparing their clothes for the day, to making their own beds, the children were able to develop their life skills in a safe, fun environment.”

The children had the full support of five experienced staff as they participated in a host of outdoor pursuits, and enjoyed their independence. Additionally, they worked towards an ASDAN qualification - a flexible, multi-level programme aimed at 11-19 year olds.

“We’re really pleased to have been able to support Bexley SNAP in providing the children with such a great opportunity,” says Apex Lifts Managing Director, Warren Jenchner. “When you hear about the fun the children had, and how much the families appreciated it, it makes it all worthwhile.”
