Stoneham Kitchens demonstrates the journey from an idea to a finished kitchen for Sevenoaks students
In February, Stoneham Kitchens helped sixth form students from Sevenoaks School studying for their Design Technology International Baccalaureate to enhance their knowledge of manufacturing. The students visited the Stoneham Kitchens factory and showroom in Sidcup for an interactive tour.
All the cabinetry components that eventually become Stoneham Kitchens are manufactured onsite at the Sidcup factory, so the Sevenoaks sixth formers were able to experience the full manufacturing process, from design using Computer-aided Design (CAD) software, to Computer Numerical Control (CNC) machinery to cut individual components in even the most resistant materials cut precisely and accurately.
“With a subject like design, practical experience and learning is vital,” explains Becky Brown, Design Technology teacher at Sevenoaks School. “The students really enjoyed being able to actually see the manufacturing process, step-by-step.”
With technology becoming ever more important in the British manufacturing industry, the students were given a demonstration of the use of some advanced IT; 3D unit drawings are used to manufacture kitchen components, with optimised cutting lists of materials, machine shaping and drilling codes created simultaneously. This makes the manufacturing process quick and efficient, and is combined with hand finishing for more complicated design details for a truly bespoke finish.
It wasn’t just the students who had a great day: “It was a pleasure to show the Sevenoaks Design Technology students the ins and outs of the British manufacturing industry,” says Howard Stoneham, Sales Director at Stoneham Kitchens. “Perhaps one day in the not so distant future, they’ll be joining our kitchen design team!”
