To kick off a year of celebratory activity to commemorate its 150th anniversary, Stoneham Kitchens, based in Sidcup, Kent, is launching two competitions, open to schools in the London Boroughs of Bromley and Bexley. Students are invited to design the kitchen of the future, or create a Stoneham Doodle to win prizes for entrants and their schools. The winning designs will be featured on the Stoneham Kitchens’ website and at the Grand Designs 2014 exhibition in May.

Founded in 1864, this year marks the 150-year milestone for bespoke kitchen manufacturer, Stoneham Kitchens and the South London company is launching its celebrations with two art and design competitions for local primary and secondary schools:

1. The Kitchen of the Future

Young artists, designers and inventors are asked to look into the future and draw, paint, design or make the kitchen of 2064. What will kitchens look like in 50 years? What colours will we use? What kind of appliances will we need? What new technology will there be? The competition has three categories: years 5 & 6, 7 – 11 and 12 & 13.

2. The Stoneham Doodle

Inspired by the Google Doodle, which sees the iconic logo redesigned to celebrate holidays, anniversaries and the lives of famous artists and pioneers, Stoneham Kitchens is presenting the company logo as a canvas for budding artists and designers to get creative and express the past 150 years of kitchen design, British manufacturing and Stoneham’s colourful history. The competition is open to students in years 7-13.

The prize

The winner in each category will receive £75 of Amazon vouchers and £500 for their school, and the runner up will receive £30 of Amazon vouchers and £200 for their school. The winning designs will be displayed at the Stoneham Kitchens stand at Grand Designs Live 2014, held at Excel, London 3-11th May.

Managing Director, Adrian Stoneham is excited about the competition: “It’s a really fantastic year for Stoneham Kitchens as we celebrate the past 150 years, and the designs and innovations that got us here. We hope the art and design competitions will inspire local students to get excited about kitchen design, learn about British manufacturing and that we’ll discover some budding designers and innovators!”
