Samhällsbyggnadsbolaget i Norden AB (publ) (“SBB”), LKAB and the Swedish Police Authority have signed an agreement with the aim of constructing a new police station centrally in Kiruna.

Currently, the police house is located just south of the current center, in a property owned by SBB. With the ongoing social transformation, LKAB is replacing the police station currently owned by SBB with an equivalent building centrally in the new Kiruna center.

“I am pleased that we have secured the location of a socially important function in the new center and also secured land for the future of the mine. A very good collaboration with SBB and the Swedish Police Authority has made it possible for us to reach our goal”, says Anders Lundgren, Project Manager at the Social Transformation Unit at LKAB.

The Swedish Police Authority has developed a strategy for the development of its operations until 2024. To be able to implement that strategy, the Police Authority’s premises need to be expanded and developed. SBB is therefore also investing in and expanding the new building in terms of size compared to the previous police station. The new police station is deemed, based on its location and design, to be able to meet the needs of the Swedish Police Authority and is planned to be completed during 2023.

“The police station is part of the social transformation in Kiruna and SBB has together with LKAB for a number of years been working on a solution for a move of, and new establishment of, the Swedish Police Authority’s overall operations to the new Kiruna center. We have had a very good collaboration, in a complicated process, and it is gratifying that SBB, the Swedish Police Authority and LKAB have now reached a government approval", says Christer Melander, Regional Manager North at Samhällsbyggnadsbolaget I Norden AB.

The lease agreement comprising 9,985 sq.m. for the new police station extends over 15 years commencing in 2023 with a total rental value of approximately SEK 250m.
