Digital Tools Enable Piercing and Tattoo Studios to Get Rid of Cash Payments

Book Salon is helping piercing and tattoo studios to become more digital and profitable by enabling pre-booking, gift card sales all-year-round, and removing the need to accept cash payments.

London, UK (November 24th, 2022) Book Salon, a payment and booking service provider specialising in hair, beauty, and wellness companies, has expanded its service offering to piercing and tattoo studios to help them digitise their bookings and payments.

“According to estimates, there are over 3,000 tattoo and piercing studios in the UK. However, the beauty industry in the UK is still far from being fully digital, as 75% of all beauty salons and studios don’t use digital tools to manage their businesses. Digital tools would make their lives easier and enable entrepreneurs to do what they want – be it piercing their customers, or leaving home early,” says Book Salon CEO Harri Myllylä.

In the meanwhile, Fortune Business Insights estimated that the global tattoo market size is steadily growing with almost 10% GACR growth until 2029, and it’s already estimated at USD 1.89 billion. This will mean that there will be more new entrepreneurs entering the industry that would benefit from using digital tools to manage their businesses. Also, having modern ways for marketing, such as functioning websites with fully integrated booking systems, entrepreneurs could stand out in the crowded market.

Book Salon’s platform is already having an impact in piercing and tattoo studios. Using Book Salon’s payment system, Helsinki-based Paradise Tattoo & Piercing has managed to completely get rid of cash payments. The implementation of the online purchase system has also led to a clear increase in gift card sales year-round, not just in the traditional peak periods around major holidays.

“The Book Salon online booking system has made it much easier to run my business. For example, almost all our appointments for piercings are now booked 3-4 days in advance, making it easier for the artists to plan their work. Previously, we spent too much time on paperwork. Now it’s all automatic,” says Jussi Ranta, the owner of Paradise Tattoo & Piercing.

A key feature of the tattoo and piercing industry is that most studios have a mix of regular employees, rented seats and visiting artists. Differing payment agreements and a high turnover of people have created extra work for tattoo and piercing entrepreneurs when splitting payments and paying out commissions. Book Salon’s payment system allows each artist to create their own profile, making it easy to introduce new artists and track their work.

Jussi Ranta says: “Every artist has their own unique style, and having visiting artists is part of what makes running a tattoo studio so interesting. Still, having new talent come and go has created extra admin work in figuring out who is owed what. With Book Salon’s system to track payments, it has been much easier to make a transparent and understandable system for paying out commissions. That frees up my time to focus on helping the artists shine and growing my business.”

Book Salon’s platform has been shown to save entrepreneurs over 100 hours of admin work yearly. The company has grown substantially in the past year, expanding into the Nordic and UK markets. Over 2,500 hair, beauty and tattoo businesses now use Book Salon’s platform. They have an MRR of more than €120,000 and an NPS score of 72
