The Finnish company with an AI-powered digital facilitation platform for collaboration and social learning is the only Nordic company in the new ranking

Howspace ranked #4 on Quartz’s 2021 ranking of the best medium-sized companies for remote workers. The first remote worker ranking highlights the fact that the focus for leaders and executives needs to be on organizing hybrid and remote work in the post-pandemic world. American software companies dominate the rankings, with some European companies also making the list, and Finnish startup Howspace being the only Nordic company in the ranking.

“We are super proud and happy to get such an honourable mention. This shows that we don’t only teach others about remote and hybrid ways of working, but also live by our learnings. As the head of the company I must say that this is a humble moment,” Ilkka Mäkitalo, Howspace’s CEO, commented.

Howspace is a dialogue-driven learning and organizational development platform powered by AI. By bringing facilitation methods to a digital environment, it delivers increased involvement, engagement, and sustained impact in both learning programs and organizational development initiatives.

“The future of remote work hinges on how adaptive and innovative companies are willing to be,” said Quartz Executive Editor Heather Landy. “That’s why Quartz’s first-ever global list of the best companies for remote workers is so important. It showcases who is already leading the way—across every time zone. These are the companies that are making it easy for employees to work from anywhere, encouraging them to get away from work when they need to, and offering great perks and practices for remote workers so they can do it all.”

The ranking assessed company practices and measured employee satisfaction in areas including leadership, pay and benefits, training and development, corporate culture, communication, and overall engagement. “Finland is the happiest country in the world, and we hope that the honest, reliable working culture we have is something that we can scale to the world. Working in a hybrid environment can and will be challenging to both leaders and employees. Luckily there are tools and best practices to ease the journey,” Mäkitalo continued. “Personally, I believe that trust and open communication are keys to succeeding. That way we are able to be inclusive in working in diverse teams in hybrid settings.”

Howspace has previously raised €15M in funding. The company’s roots extend back to its founding under the Humap name in 1999 by Olli-Pekka Juoperi, Ilkka Mäkitalo and Vesa Purokuru. Founded as a spin-off in 2008, the company today employs 60+ people in Europe and North America, offering support to customers and partners in more than 30 countries.
