Monthly Traffic and Capacity Data - May 2001 1. May in brief Passenger traffic (RPK) showed an overall increase of 0,9% in May 2001 vs. May 2000 and number of passengers decreased by 3,3%. Overall capacity (ASK) increased by 6,8% and passenger load factor decreased by 3,8 p.u. · Business Class traffic was down 4,9% and Economy Class was up 3,8%. · The passenger load factor decreased from 69,4% to 65,6%. It must be noted that May 2001 compared with May 2000 had a different pattern of holidays. This is estimated to have affected total traffic (RPK) negatively by 3-4 p.u. and an additional 4-5 p.u. in Business Class. The overall development is slightly weaker than expected, but the outlook for the full year "passenger traffic growth of 6-7%", remains unchanged. Greenland 2. Passenger Traffic and Capacity per route area - May 2001 Intercontinental capacity increased by 7,6% as the new non-stop service Copenhagen-Washington was introduced on May 12. The new route started well and the average passenger load factor was close to 80%. Traffic to/ from Asia continued well with average passenger load factors above 80%, with the exception of the route to/ from Delhi that showed weaker development. Capacity on European routes increased by 11% while traffic increased by 1%. As a result passenger load factor decreased by 5,7 p.u. A general weakening of demand can be noted on most European routes in particular to/ from Sweden. Traffic to from the U.K developed weaker particularly in Business Class. Intrascandinavian traffic continued well, particularly on the capital triangle. Passenger load factors are weaker, but this has been necessary in order to resolve the bottlenecks in the traffic system on the important feeder routes. In general, traffic developed stronger to/ from Norway and weaker to/ from Sweden. Danish domestic traffic developed fairly well adjusted for the differences in holidays. Following a few months of growth, the Norwegian domestic total market traffic fell by 6% in May. SAS traffic was almost unchanged in May and this improved passenger load factor to almost 64% as capacity was reduced further. The current overcapacity on Norwegian domestic routes is estimated to 12-14%. Swedish domestic traffic developed weaker, but this is mainly explained by the pattern of holidays. Capacity (ASK) was up 1%, but with the introduction of new larger aircraft no. of frequencies was down 10%.
