Cheshire-based Boughey Distribution is putting the first Schmitz Cargobull Euroliner (S.CS Universal) to the test within its 280-strong trailer fleet.  The trailer also stands out for featuring the new FIXStrap proprietary load securing system offered by Schmitz Cargobull in association with NWE Network Engineering.

Paul Brimelow, Boughey’s Group Fleet Engineer, will be monitoring the trailer’s performance over the coming months, as he assesses how it copes with UK operations versus conventional curtainsiders.

Commenting on the new delivery, Brimelow says: “The Euroliner costs less to buy than a traditional UK-spec trailer, its lighter – which means carrying capacity is greater – and we expect it to hold its residual value better.

“At Boughey Distribution we focus on making our business as efficient as possible for our customers.  If the Euroliner and this new load securing system perform as well as we hope it will, we’ll look at buying more in the future.”

2013 is the sixth successive year of Boughey Distribution purchasing trailers from Schmitz Cargobull, with this latest addition marking the 90thSchmitz trailer to join the fleet.  It will be used for general UK distribution, primarily carrying ambient groceries such as canned food and beverages to major multiples nationwide.

Loads are secured via the innovative FIXStrap system, which comprises 13 pairs of straps attached to bungee cords on the roof, which spring out of the way when not in use.  When required, they can be reached by the driver and used to secure loads safely to the deck on both sides.  This can be done without the need for the driver to throw the strap across the load, or to climb over the load whilst carrying the strap.  As well as saving time and guaranteeing load security, the system’s bungee cord retention facility prevents straps being lost when not in use.

Innovatively, this trailer’s ability to load through the roof is uninhibited by the FIXStrap system.  Furthermore, the sliding tarpaulin Schmitz Cargobull Safety Roof helps to maximise internal trailer height and permits loading up to the reinforced roof mechanism.

The S.CS Universal weighs approximately 500kg less than a standard UK curtainsider, guaranteeing an ultra-competitive payload capacity and a load space which can accommodate up to 34 Euro pallets.  It achieves this whilst meeting the European Standard EN 12642 (Code XL), which ensures the trailer will retain its cargo in the event of an incident.  The load securing system is required when the load is not a “positive fit” and of varying heights.

To ensure uniformity with the rest of the fleet, Boughey has specified an optional false front bulkhead in the trailer to enable flush loading in line with traditional curtainsiders.

Key to the S.CS Universal’s projected higher residual value is its unrivalled compatibility with the majority of dry freight trailers operated by fleets on the continent.  This opens up a greater choice of resale options via the export market after its first life in service with Boughey Distribution.
