FIRST SCHMITZ CARGOBULL FOR BRIAN YEARDLEY CONTINENTAL
17 August 2012
West Yorkshire-based international logistics specialist Brian Yeardley Continental has taken delivery of its first ever Schmitz Cargobull trailer – a MEGA Euroliner – as part of a benchmarking exercise against its existing trailer fleet.
Managing Director Kevin Hopper placed the order after securing Schmitz Cargobull’s commitment to building a trailer which matched his precise specification.
Hopper explains: “It’s always better to have a choice of suppliers, and on first impressions this new Schmitz Cargobull trailer is proving to be very impressive. I’m getting excellent feedback from my warehouse manager and our drivers; plus its delivering some added benefits too, such as fuel efficiency.”
The tri-axle trailer has been built primarily to transport chemicals to mainland Europe, returning to the UK with white goods and automotive components. The nature of this work requires 16 pairs of lashing positions to be installed on the trailer deck, together with anti-vandal reinforced curtains and a lifting front axle to minimise tyre wear. Michelin 445/45 R 19.5 XTA2+ Energy tyres are specified.
The trailer also meets DIN EN 12642 Code XL certification for load security and is fitted with Schmitz Cargobull’s own ROTOS running gear, in place of the customer’s usual preference for BPW axles.
Joining a core fleet of 27 4x2 tractor units and 40 MEGA trailers, the Schmitz Cargobull stands out for its ability to lower its roof height from 3m to 2.75m – 10cm lower than other trailers in the fleet. Hopper explains: “10cm might not sound like a lot, but when the trailer is covering up to 3,500km a week, this can equate to a three per cent saving in fuel.
“Volume is another priority; the inside front wall of the trailer features a neat chamfered edge set-back into the bulkhead which helps us to maximise the payload we can carry. We estimate it has increased our available load space by approximately 12cm,” he adds.
The new trailer is expected to remain in service with Brian Yeardley Continental for five years. One of the company’s unique selling points is its modern fleet, and Hopper believes firmly in replacing tractor units at approximately three years of age, and trailers at five years.
“Technology is changing fast in the road transport industry and maintaining an up-to-date fleet sets you apart from the competition and is part of our promise to customers. We don’t want to be running older kit where the reliability stakes and potential for downtime start to increase.”
