The Ice Co, one of Europe’s largest ice manufacturers, has taken delivery of eight new Schmitz Cargobull S.KO COOL refrigerated trailers in a move which sees it standardising on Schmitz Cargobull products for future fleet deliveries.

The trailers, which join the four identical S.KO COOL reefers bought earlier this year, are a mixture of additions and replacements for the 50-strong fleet. They will be used to deliver ice and frozen foods from the firm’s South Kirby and Preston sites to the UK’s big retailers and wholesalers in a 24/7 operation.

Key to securing the order was Schmitz Cargobull’s high residual values and low maintenance costs, combined with its unique semi chassis design. This sees its reefer models sit approximately 100mm lower than competitor trailers, whilst maintaining the same internal working height dimensions.

This reduction in overall height reduces the frontal area of the trailer by approximately 2.4 per cent, reducing aerodynamic drag force by the same amount. Tests show that this can result in fuel savings of around 1.2 per cent – equating to approximately £700 - £1,000 per annum, per trailer. In addition, the Schmitz Cargobull semitrailer chassis and vapour diffusion proof body benefits from the lowest possible weight. Tests have shown that typically the Schmitz Cargobull S.KO COOL can deliver fuel savings of around £500 per annum due to savings in tare weight.

Trevor Hudson, Managing Director of The Ice Co, who saw the trailers being built first hand at Schmitz Cargobull’s Vreden factory in Germany, says: “This year is the first time we have ever bought our trailers outright. Previously we have always hired or leased them, but the high residual values of the Schmitz Cargobull product makes ownership an attractive proposition as we know they’ll command strong resale prices in five years time. Overall it is a very robust piece of kit.”

“Nothing is too much trouble for the Schmitz Cargobull team; they were particularly flexible when it came to producing a bespoke and cost-effective rear-end roller compression buffer system for us.”

Another unique feature built into the new trailers is a 45 degree angled rear step, designed for added driver and delivery staff health and safety.

The new trailers have each been built with Schmitz Cargobull’s FERROPLAST® panels, which utilise the latest NX 17 foam technology developed by Schmitz to offer improved insulation and body strength. The trailer’s unique joint-free in-process corner capping system also ensures a water tight seal to maintain thermal efficiency.

Each of the new trailers has been supplied on a full maintenance contract and are expected to be in service for at least five years. They will carry The Ice Co’s livery with a range of three new catchy slogans emblazoned on the trailer sides: ‘Cooler Than A Cucumber’, ‘Cooler Than A North Pole Dance’ and ‘Cooler Than The Tip Of The Iceberg’. Four of the eight trailers will carry the slogan for the company’s latest product: ‘Ice And A Slice’.

All eight trailers have been built with Schmitz Cargobull’s ROTOS® running gear, featuring a complete series-standard range of safety equipment, including maintenance-free bearing, an innovative ventilation system for the disc brakes, the weight-optimised brake calliper, the multi-ride-height pneumatic suspension for every ramp height along with the standard trailer EBS (Electronic Braking System) with RSP (Roll Stability Program).

The new trailers are specified with Carrier Transicold Vector™ 1550 mono temperature refrigeration units. They are also fitted with a dual view trailer bulkhead-mounted digital temperature display, which features a reverse image option to enable drivers to view temperature readings through their rear view mirror whilst on the road.
