A Grimsby-based owner-driver has bought his seventh Schmitz Cargobull reefer, marking the silver anniversary of their relationship.

Kevin Brown bought his first of four used reefers from Schmitz Cargobull 25 years ago, before moving onto new trailers in 1998. His latest purchase of the S.KO COOL FP45 is the third new reefer the haulier has bought to transport frozen vegetables, fish and ready meals from the UK to regional distribution centres in mainland Europe. Manufactured at Schmitz Cargobull’s reefer factory in Vreden, Brown’s new tri-axle trailer has been specified with the company’s own ROTOS® running gear.

Brown says: “I’ve always bought from Schmitz Cargobull because the reefers are perfect for my business. The residual value remains high as they are a trusted name across Europe, so it’s easy for me to sell on my trailer and replace it approximately every five years.”

The other secret of success in the relationship is the ease of maintenance. Brown’s previous reefer, which he has run for five and a half years, still has all its original parts, with the exception of the brake pads, which were finally replaced a few months prior to being traded in. The haulier is also confident that should he ever need to arrange repairs, he can easily schedule this wherever he is on a job, thanks to Schmitz Cargobull’s pan-European network of service centres.

As Brown makes two runs a week to Europe, it is vital that any maintenance or repairs can be carried out quickly so he can get back on the road. The Schmitz Cargobull chassis is bolted and galvanised, meaning in the event of damage, parts can be fixed without the need for costly welding and painting. And as the bodywork is comprised of individual panels, factory-quality repairs can be made to the damaged sections without needing to replace the whole side of the trailer.

Brown also appreciates the wider internal width available, thanks to Schmitz Cargobull’s thin yet strong Ferroplast panels. “The extra internal width this offers over GRP sides means it’s easier to load,” he says. “It’s simply more forgiving, so you don’t need to spend time aligning everything perfectly when loading.”

Thanks to these advantages, Brown has relied on Schmitz Cargobull for a quarter of a century – and with his latest purchase, a 30thpearl anniversary definitely looks to be on the road ahead.

Brown drives a Scania 164 480 hp tractor unit, clocking up around 130,000 km every year.
