Norfolk-based poultry producer Bernard Matthews has taken delivery of six new Schmitz Cargobull refrigerated trailers just in time for Christmas. The new reefers will replace older trailers as the company prepares for its busiest season.

The reefers will join the other 35 Schmitz Cargobull trailers which make up more than half of the Bernard Matthews fleet. The dual-temperature refrigerated trailers will be used to transport temperature-controlled poultry products from the company’s production sites in Great Witchingham, Norfolk and Holton, Suffolk to third-party distributors throughout the UK.

Jeff Hellmore, Bernard Matthews’ Transport Operations Manager says: “When it came to replacing the trailers, Schmitz Cargobull was at the top of our list. We’ve always been very happy with our previous purchases and know from our extensive experience that a Schmitz Cargobull trailer is a high quality, cost-effective trailer.”

Hellmore adds: “The purchasing process was very straightforward and the new reefers arrived when promised. We have a new brand identity we wished to start communicating on our livery, and given it’s our busiest season of the year, it was crucial that we received our trailers on time. We knew we could trust Schmitz Cargobull to keep a promise and thanks to that, we can ensure families across the country will be able to tuck into a traditional turkey dinner this Christmas.”

The new Schmitz Cargobull trailers feature the German manufacturer’s proprietary FERROPLAST® panels, which offer excellent insulation and are easy to repair in the event of damage. Unlike GRP, they do not absorb moisture and thus increase the tare weight of the reefer over time. This is key for the poultry producer, which expects to get the maximum payload from its trailers – thereby reducing the number of trips and ultimately decreasing costs.

Built at the Schmitz Cargobull production facility in Vreden, Germany, the trailers also come equipped with the manufacturer’s MF6 Multi-Function Floor which not only reduces trailer weight – therefore further increasing payload – but also offers better grip, a longer life expectancy and quieter operation.

The floor is designed to ensure quick and easy cleaning and exceeds the PIEK noise requirements, with a noise level of less than 60db during loading and unloading, making it ideal for deliveries in residential areas.

Bernard Matthews was founded in 1950 and has 56 farms throughout Norfolk, Suffolk and Lincolnshire. The company produces more than seven million turkeys annually. Bernard Matthews is Quality British Turkey and Assured Foods (Red Tractor) certified and adheres to a rigorous set of criteria that not only reassures that its turkeys are British, but that they are reared to high standards of food safety, traceability and animal welfare.
