AB Volvo partners centre for research into traffic safety in China
AB Volvo is one of five partners behind a new centre for research into traffic safety in China that was inaugurated today, December 18, in Beijing. The China Sweden Research Centre for Traffic Safety signals closer cooperation between Sweden and China in the field of transportation.
In China, which is one of the world’s biggest markets for cars and heavy trucks, traffic safety has emerged as an increasingly important issue for both the Chinese government and the general public. When Sweden’s Minister for Enterprise Annie Lööf visited China in May 2012, the Swedish and Chinese governments signed a letter of intent regarding a joint research facility for traffic safety.
The China Sweden Research Centre for Traffic Safety was inaugurated today and will conduct research projects with the aim of improving road safety both in Sweden and in China. Pilot projects are already under way, including some whose focus is on studying accidents in China involving trucks and buses. The research centre also aims to boost the exchange of technology and knowhow between the two countries and to support the two governments’ decisions on issues relating to traffic safety.
“With safety as one of our core values, the Volvo Group has long experience of working with traffic safety issues. China is a vital market and one of the benefits of this cooperation is that we gain better insight into its traffic situation at the same time as we can build up valuable experience through hands-on work together with Chinese universities, research institutes and public authorities,” says Jan-Eric Sundgren, Executive Vice President Public & Environmental Affairs at the Volvo Group.
“The fact that both governments want to bring Volvo on board in this process is clear evidence of the Group’s leading role in vehicle and traffic safety”.
The other partners in addition to AB Volvo are Volvo Car Group, Chalmers University of Technology, the Chinese Ministry of Transport’s Research Institute of Highways and Tongji University.
