Dog ownership: How much does it really cost?

Report this content

Having a dog is a lifetime financial commitment so when choosing a puppy, it is important to remember that there's more to consider than just its physical appearance. While it may be tempting to choose a puppy based solely on how cute it looks, it's crucial to consider all the responsibilities that come with pet ownership.

It is not just the purchase price of the dog that you should consider. Remember, all dogs require ongoing routine care such as vaccinations, flea and worm treatments and grooming. You should also consider the cost of a lifetime insurance policy.

Certain dog breeds are genetically healthier than others and in general require fewer visits to the vet.

“If you're dreaming of getting a puppy this spring or summer, my advice is to not only choose a puppy based on your heart but also to do your research and gather the breed-specific facts.” says Bernard O'Sullivan, managing director at Agria Petinsure in Ireland

95% percent of dog owners are aware of various health problems associated with dog breeds. However, a recent survey by Agria has revealed that only 47% dog owners take the breed specific health of their puppy into consideration.

“With the current economic downturn, many pet owners are concerned about the rising costs of veterinary care. However, opting for a healthy and fit dog breed can help mitigate these costs. Buying pet insurance can also be a smart move for any pet owner looking to keep their furry friend healthy without breaking the bank.” says Bernard O'Sullivan, managing director at Agria Petinsure in Ireland

It's important to note that no dog breed is completely immune to health issues, but some breeds are generally considered to be genetically healthier. Here are some examples of dog breeds that are known for their good health in Ireland:

  1. Border Collie
  2. Greyhound
  3. Jack Russell Terrier
  4. Cairn Terrier
  5. Border Terrier
  6. Whippet

Agria, in partnership with the research firm Xtreme, conducted a survey of 400 dog owners to examine their methods for selecting the appropriate dog breed.
