Press invitation: Launch of the Global Burden of Foodborne Diseases estimates
WHO European Office invites you to the UN City in Copenhagen on Thursday, 3 December 2015, 13:00-14:30 (entrance between 12:00-12:45)
to the launch of the first ever estimates of the global burden of foodborne diseases focusing on the European Region.
Experts from the Foodborne Disease Burden Epidemiology Reference Group (FERG), European Commission, European Food Safety Authority (EFSA), the Danish Consumer Council and World Health Organization will discuss new data on illnesses and deaths caused by food.
Foodborne diseases can be short-term, causing symptoms such as nausea, vomiting and diarrhea — commonly referred to as food poisoning — or longer-term, causing illnesses such as cancer, kidney or liver failure, and brain disorders. Foodborne disease can also cause death. Foodborne diseases may be more serious in children, pregnant women, the elderly, or those with weakened immune system. Children who survive some of the more serious foodborne diseases may suffer from delayed physical and mental development, impacting their quality of life permanently.
Panelists:
- Dr Claudia Stein, Director, Information, Evidence, Research & Innovation Division, WHO/Europe
- Dr Hilde Kruse, Programme Manager Food Safety, WHO/Europe
- Dr Marta Hugas, Head of Biological Hazards and Contaminants Unit, EFSA
