Bukowskis Contemporary & Design: Press opening on November 10, 09.30 – 11.00 am

The first auction devoted only to Swedish and international contemporary will present essential works of artists active today. Among the principal items is a rotating installation and projection by Olafur Eliasson and a painting by Cecilia Edefalk, her monumental Baby from 1986-1987.  Baby could potentially become the most expensive painting by a  now living Swedish artist.

-          It will be exciting to see if the interest in contemporary art in Sweden is as big as it is internationally, Great Britain, the United States and China, where the prices achieved for contemporary art have reached record levels, says Bukowskis’ managing director Michael Storåkers.

Also photography takes a giant leap into the auction world. A unique photo by Helmut Newton (a print from a legendary exhibition in Paris in 1992) is an example of the new standing of photography in the auction world. Domestic Nude V is a classic Newton showing an imposingly beautiful model radiating power and mysticism. Estimated at SEK 145 000 EUR, this photo may be the most expensive photo ever sold in Sweden.

-          Generally, one may say that the status of contemporary art has increased like an avalanche. This contemporary “fever” partially owes to certain British artists and actors. Collecting contemporary works of art may be interpreted as that the buyer wants to show that he or she is “with it”, and let the artist’s daring and creativity spill over a little on the owner, says Lena Nytén, Bukowskis’ expert on contemporary art.

The auction also contains important paintings by Ola Billgren, John-E Franzén and Lena Cronquist as well as works by artists from significantly younger generations, like Boo Ritson (born in 1969), Gunnel Wåhlstrand, Linn Fernström, or Ylva Ogland, all three of them born in 1974.

At the auction:

Baby, 1986-1987 by Cecilia Edefalk, estimated at SEK 620 000 - 830 000 – EUR
Quadruple Spiral, by Olafur Eliasson, 2004, estimated at SEK 260 000 – 310 000 EUR
Återkomsten (The return), 1967 by Jan Håfström, estimated at 620 000 – 830 000 EUR
So long, salong, 2004, by Karin Mamma Andersson, estimated at SEK 124 000 – 144 000EUR.
Kust (Shore), 1990 by Ola Billgren, estimated at SEK 103 000 – 124 000 EUR.

The auction takes place on November 17.
