Piracy outside the Somaliland coast - how do we stop it?

Report this content

Since 2008 there has been a sharp rise in attacks by pirates off the coast of Somalia on ships transiting the Gulf of Aden and the Indian Ocean. These attacks have a negative impact on peace and security of the region, especially since armed gangs have been hijacking vessels and demanding ransoms for the release of both vessels and crew.  During 2012 the Somali pirates have been under more pressure than during the last five years. The risk-reward ratio for putting to sea and raiding commercial shipping is now far less favourable than it used to be partly because of a combined naval forces raid on one of their land bases back in May last year. How long will this last and what options do the pirates have? How can Somaliland play a role in finding a solution to this problem when Somalia is such an unstable country? What are the Swedish Navy's experience regarding this?
