Gapwaves lanserar 77 GHz vågledarantenn för bilradar
Driven by the increased demand for high performance antennas from the automotive industry, Gapwaves presents a 77 GHz waveguide reference antenna for automotive radars. The evaluation of the antenna shows increased performance related to detection coverage, detection range and thermal handling of the electronics compared to the commonly used PCB based antennas. The reference antenna is designed with a standardized waveguide interface for integration and evaluation in any Tier 1 suppliers’ radar solutions.
Gapwaves 77 GHz reference antenna for automotive radar has 2 Tx (transmitter) and 4 Rx (receivers) with standardized waveguide interfaces. With this setup, different customers are offered the possibility to connect their specific radar circuits for testing and evaluation of the radar performance achieved with Gapwaves waveguide antenna. The reference antenna has showed impressive results with increased coverage area, longer detection distance and better thermal handling of the electronics compared to the commonly used PCB based antennas.
“As the automotive industry has shown great interest in Gapwaves antenna technology we have developed a reference antenna that can be used for tests and verifications at early stages. By doing so, the antenna can be evaluated by any potential customer, without individual design specifications” says Marcus Hasselblad, head of product development at Gapwaves.
”We are very excited to provide more automotive suppliers, Tier 1’s, the opportunity to test and evaluate our antenna. We expect several potential customers to integrate our antenna technology in their future versions of radar sensors. That being said, we are facing a technology shift from PCB based antennas with high signal losses to low-loss waveguide based antennas” says Lars-Inge Sjöqvist, CEO Gapwaves.
As a result of the progress within the development of active safety systems (ADAS), the demands from the automotive industry for better radar solutions have increased. Automotive radars are currently used for applications such as adaptive cruise control and blind spot detection, but the fields of use are expected to increase in the future. From 2020 Euro NCAP will require autonomous emergency braking systems for vulnerable road users in all vehicles receiving five-star rating. The Gapwaves waveguide technology enables an efficient, low-loss, antenna for 77 GHz radar providing a larger field of view and better performance (a factor of 2 both in transmit and receive mode) compared to today’s PCB-based antenna solutions.
