Ebba Matz ställer ut på Cecilia Hillström Gallery

Utställningen Duchamp, Babitz & Matz pågår till och med den 20 december på Hälsingegatan 43, Stockholm.

Cecilia Hillström Gallery has the great pleasure of presenting Ebba Matz's first solo exhibition at the gallery. With a solid platform on the Swedish art scene, Matz's work has been featured in numerous exhibitions and public commissions since the early nineties. The project Duchamp, Babitz & Matz is an installation with objects and photography, inspired by a dream in which Matz encountered Marcel Duchamp in the department storeBazar de l’Hôtel de Ville in Paris. The text included in the exhibition describes how Matz – still in her dream – ends up playing tic tac toe on Duchamp’s checked shirt with an imagined Eve Babitz (the woman depicted in the famous photograph playing chess in the nude with Duchamp).

With her characteristic focus on interaction with the exhibition space, Matz’s installation pinpoints how the canon of art history plays a part in our perception of art. With ingenuity and a poetic point of departure she recreates a feeling of wonder in the face of the unexpected. Matz is currently participating in the exhibition urSinnen at Färgfabriken (until 30 November).

Ebba Matz has on many occasions been selected for public commissions, most recently in cooperation with White Arkitekter in Malmö for St Johannesplan – a unique concrete floor with intarsia. In the project Déjà vu in Uppsala, Matz made water-jet-cut sheets of stainless steel in the shape of ink dropped on paper, while the sculpture Här/Here in Gothenburg takes the form of an enlarged map pin, to mention a few. 

Ebba Matz (b 1963) graduated from Royal Institute of Arts in 1992. Her work has been shown at Färgfabriken, Royal Academy of Fine Arts, Cité des Arts, Paris, Wanås Art, Moderna Museet c/o Malmö Konsthall and Magasin 3 and in numerous other exhibitions in France, Germany, USA, Canada, and Poland. She was awarded the Moderna Museet Sculpture Prize in the memory of Sigrid Lind in 2001. Matz’s work is represented in the collections of Moderna Museet, Malmö Art Museum, Gothenburg Art Museum, Public Art Agency Sweden and Dunkers Kulturhus.
