Test Site Sweden (TSS) at Lindholmen Science Park in Göteborg has been appointed the Beta Integration site for the CVIS project, an important step towards the next generation of European Intelligent Transport Systems (ITS). Test Site Sweden will provide world-leading demonstrations and test environments for innovative vehicle technology and infrastructure with the aim to support an evolution towards fully sustainable transport.

Intelligent Cooperative Systems are the next challenge in automotive electronics and ITS, based on Vehicle-to-Vehicle (V2V) and Vehicle-to-Infrastructure (V2I) communications. Applications of these new technologies hold out the promise of great improvements in transport system efficiency, safety and environmental impact.

CVIS (Cooperative Vehicle-Infrastructure Systems) is a major European research and development project, co-funded by the European Commission under the Sixth Framework Programme. CVIS aims to design, develop and test the technologies needed to allow vehicles to communicate, and thus interact, with each other and with the nearby roadside infrastructure. Based on such real-time road and traffic information, many novel applications can be produced. The consequence will be fewer traffic accidents, lower delays and costs, and reduced fuel consumption and pollutant emissions. The project’s ambition is to begin a revolution in mobility for travellers and goods, completely re-engineering how drivers, their vehicles, the goods they carry and the transport infrastructure interact.

The Beta Integration test site at Lindholmen Science Park in Göteborg will provide the initial integration and testing of in-vehicle and roadside equipment before CVIS demonstrations take place at a total of six test sites (France, Germany, Italy, Netherlands-Belgium, Sweden (Lindholmen) and United Kingdom). Each test site features participation of local road authorities and operators, system integrators, suppliers, vehicle manufacturers, and service providers. Other Swedish partners in CVIS are Makewave, Kapsch TrafficCom, Swedish Road Administration and Volvo Technology.
