Following the rise in tuition fees for students at British universities, a 15% increase has been seen in UK applicants to Lund University in Sweden, a comprehensive university ranked as one of the top 100 in the world.

Lund University is an international university with students from all across the world. As the application period for studies commencing in August 2013 closed on 15 January, it became clear that the UK has strengthened its position as the number one country for international applicants to the university, with 639 applications this year compared to 558 last year. British students therefore look set to continue as the largest international student group at Lund University. In Sweden overall Indian students dominate the international applications, so it is evident that UK students prefer Lund as a study destination.

Alice Evans from Staffordshire is one of the many UK students who arrived at Lund University last autumn to study a Master’s degree in Biology:

“I knew I wanted to do an MSc but the cost in the UK would be £8–9000. I was specifically interested in Biology with Molecular Ecology and since Lund offered this course, and on top of that is one of the world’s top ranked universities along with the free tuition, my choice was quite easy – to stay out of debt.”

Lund University offers 90 Master’s programmes and five Bachelor’s programmes taught in English. The most popular programmes are International Marketing and Brand Management, International Development and Management, Human Rights, Public Health, and Development Studies.

“We are very happy to see that applications from the UK are increasing and that Lund University is growing in popularity. One explanation for the increase is of course the rise in tuition fees in the UK, but also our own efforts to market ourselves internationally. The UK is one of our top prioritised countries”, says Richard Stenelo, Head of International Marketing and Recruitment.

*Studying in Sweden is free for all EU citizens. Students who do not hold a European Union passport are subject to tuition fees.
