DiGi, in which Telenor has a 49 per cent ownership interest, won the first ever Prime Minister's (PM) CSR Award to be handed out in Malaysia. In its citation, the jury emphasized DiGi's clear commitment to CSR, which goes beyond policies and financial and legal obligations. The award follows a string of positive corporate responsibility (CR) initiatives for which Telenor Group has received extensive recognition. Telenor has also been ranked number one the Dow Jones Sustainability Indexes in the mobile communications sector.

Sharing best practice The PM's CSR award highlights DiGi's commitment to CR. It is also an example of the Telenor Group's emphasis on a local approach supported by global expertise. Whilst the Telenor Group provides strategic support and enables sharing of best practice, we never impose one formula worldwide. Local human resources and expertise will always be key to our success. CR programmes in DiGi focus primarily on building up its staff and help preserve the country's heritage.
"Our CR concentrates on people, as this is the strategic advantage that makes it hard for competitors to emulate", says DiGi's director of strategy and corporate affairs Tunku Alizakri Alias.
Recognition for CR initiatives DiGi won the PM's CSR Award ahead of 316 entries from the corporate sector in Malaysia.
"Amongst so many worthy entries, being singled out certainly feels good. The recognition is in itself a positive and humbling experience" said Vimal Kumar, Head of Corporate Responsibility in DiGi.
DiGi awarded three prizes In addition to the award for the best overall CSR, DiGi also won the categories for "Best Workplace Practices" and "Culture and Heritage". No other company won more than one award.
The award for "Best Workplace Practices" was given to DiGi for promoting good work-life balance including gender equality and for encouraging social interactions that include the families of the employees. In the category of "Culture and Heritage", companies were judged on the level of support or initiative made to champion preservation of culture and heritage in Malaysia.
