Royal Barge Procession scheduled to take place on 27 October 2024 in Bangkok.
To honor the "Celebrations on the Auspicious Occasion of His Majesty The King's 6th Cycle Birthday Anniversary, 28th July 2024," the Royal Barge Procession will be held on the Chao Phraya River in Bangkok on 27 October 2024. This will be the second Royal Barge Procession in the present reign, with the first having taken place on 12 December 2019 to commemorate the Coronation of His Majesty The King.
The royal barge procession will carry Their Majesties, the King and Queen, to Wat Arun Ratchawararam Ratchawaramahawihan for the robe-offering (kathin) ceremony. The river procession will feature 52 barges, including four principal royal barges: the Suphannahong, Narayana Song Suban, Anantanagaraj, Anekajatbhujonga Two thousand two hundred oarsmen will row the ceremonial barges along the Chao Phraya River, from the Wasukri Pier to Wat Arun, in a formation 1.2 kilometers long and 90 meters wide. The event will take place from 15:00 to 18:00 hours on 27 October.
This event is highly anticipated by both Thai citizens and international visitors, highlighting Thailand's vibrant cultural heritage. The Royal Barge Procession is a vital aspect of Thai tradition, intertwining religious significance, royal customs, and remarkable craftsmanship. It takes place infrequently, reserved for the most important cultural and religious occasions. Leading up to the historic event, the public is welcome to view the royal barges and watch the rehearsals. Here are the details:
Royal Thai Navy Dockyard
Dates and times: The public can view the royal barges from 8.30am to 4.30pm. During July on 8-12, 15-19, and 23-26 July, the public can also observe the rhythmic barge-rowing song training for oarsmen (from 2pm to 3.30pm)
Ratchaworadit Pier
Dates and times: On 27-29 July, three of the 52 royal barges – the Suphannahong, the Narai Song Suban, and the Anantanakkharat – will be displayed alongside an exhibition to honour HM The King. There will be a barge-rowing show twice a day at 3pm and 7pm (on 29 July it will be at 5pm and 8pm)
Mini rehearsal on the Chao Phraya River
Location: Under the Rama VIII Bridge
Dates and times: From 8-30 July (excluding weekends and public holidays) there will be daily training sessions on the river for the oarsmen, from 9am to 3.30pm.
Full rehearsals on the Chao Phraya River
Location: From Wasukri Pier to Wat Arun. The public can view the rehearsals at the designated areas along both sides of the Chao Phraya River from Rama VIII Bridge to Wat Arun.
Dates and times: There will be weekly rehearsals of the royal procession from 1 August to 22 October between 3pm to 6pm.
August dates: 1, 8, 15, 22
September dates: 3, 12, 19, 26
October dates: 1, 10
Two full-dress rehearsals are scheduled for 15 and 22 October ahead of the main event on 27 October.
