REUTERS FOUNDERS SHARE COMPANY APPOINTS NEW CHAIRMAN London, July 26 - The Board of Reuters Founders Share Company Limited announced today that Mr Pehr Gyllenhammar will succeed Sir Frank Rogers as Chairman on 2 September 1999. Mr Gyllenhammar is Chairman of CGU plc, the largest composite insurer in the UK; a member of the Supervisory Board of Lagardere SCA and a Senior Adviser to Lazard Freres & Co. LLC. He is a former Chairman of Volvo. He was a non-executive director of Reuters Holdings PLC from 1984 to 1997. The Board also appointed Sir Christopher Mallaby as Deputy Chairman. Sir Christopher is a former British Ambassador in Germany and France and, among other commitments, he is a Senior Adviser to Warburg Dillon Read and a director of Sun Life & Provincial Holdings. The Reuter Trustees constitute the directors and members of Reuters Founders Share Company. They have three main duties: to ensure that there is no interference in the integrity and independence of Reuters news services; that the Company devotes the proper resources to maintaining Reuters as the leading world news and information organisation; and that no single interest, group or faction comes to dominate its leadership. Mr Gyllenhammar said: "The Trustees have a unique role in ensuring the reliability, speed, independence and integrity of Reuters output.
