Inside Explorer


This image shows Inside Explorer, a new kind of 'digital specimen table', a result of collaboration between the Interactive Institute and Visualization Center C in Sweden and London’s Natural History Museum. This visualisation table enables museum visitors to interactively explore artefacts that have been scanned, using the museum’s Micro CT facilities, and is showcased at the museum’s Science Uncovered event. The subject shown is a mummified cat from ancient Egypt, which was donated to the museum by the pioneering archaeologist Flinders Petrie and is thought to be approximately 2500 years old. Using the touch table, visitors to the museum can peel away the bandages virtually and reveal the cat inside with remarkable detail. Discoveries have found that the cat is a juvenile and that the bones have been re-packed tightly to form the classic mummy shape.

Visualiseringscenter C har som mål att inspirera allmänheten, med fokus på barn och ungdomar, till intresse för naturvetenskap och ny medieteknik. Detta gör man genom att exponera och sprida kunskap om samtida visualiseringsforskning, med utgångspunkt i den forskning av världsklass som bedrivs vid Linköpings universitet, Campus Norrköping. Science centret, som ligger mitt i det unika industrilandskapet i centrala Norrköping, bedrivs av det kommunala bolaget Norrköping Visualisering AB. Bolaget ingår i konsortiebildningen Visualiseringscenter C, som är ett resultat av ett nära samarbete mellan Norrköpings kommun, Linköpings universitet, Norrköping Science Park och RISE Interactive C-Studio.
