ECS 2013: Wacker visar upp en innovativ silikonharts, en ny polymerdispersion och miljövänliga cyclodextriner för färg och lackapplikationer.

Munich, November 5, 2012 – At the European Coatings Show (ECS) in Nuremberg from March 19 to 21, 2013, the Munich-based WACKER Group is presenting, among other highlights, the novel SILRES® BS 1303 silicone resin emulsion. This new building protection product is suitable for formulating coatings with moderately hydrophobic surfaces. In silicone resin plasters, SILRES® BS 1303 also prevents pinholing of the plaster. Another première is the new VINNAPAS® LL 3019 dispersion for high-quality outdoor and indoor paint and plaster applications. The versatile binder offers excellent pigment compatibility, extremely good color stability, improved rheology and excellent process-ing characteristics. WACKER further presents its cyclodextrin technology – for example, as a process auxiliary in polymeriza-tion, for selective modification of thermal stability or as a rheol-ogy-control additive. The biodegradable molecules produced from renewable raw materials thus offer a sustainable and envi-ronmentally friendly alternative for many applications in the paints and coatings industry.

At ECS 2013, WACKER presents a new building protection product for façade paints and plasters that can be used as both a binder and an additive. In coatings applications, SILRES®BS 1303 realizes the typical effects of a silicone resin, such as low water absorption and high water-vapor permeability. But, unlike comparable products, it does not show pronounced surface hydrophobicity. For manufactur-ers of façade coatings, this opens up entirely new formulation options for adjusting the surface characteristics of the SREP®coatings (sili-cone resin emulsion paints / plasters).

The new building protection product permits coatings to be formulated with moderately hydrophobic surfaces. SILRES®BS 1303 is also ide-ally suited for formulating silicone resin plasters. The product offers excellent compatibility with such systems and can also prevent pin-holing on the plaster.

The new SILRES®BS 1303 is therefore ideal for façade applications where high quality standards are essential, and thus extends the broad WACKER portfolio for silicone resin paints and plasters, which now covers the entire bandwidth from strongly to moderately hydro-phobic surfaces for plasters and façade coatings.

New All-round Dispersion for Indoor and Outdoor Paints

The new VINNAPAS® LL 3019 dispersion based on vinyl acetate-ethylene-vinyl ester copolymers is a versatile binder for high-quality paint and plaster applications. With its good pigment compatibility and extremely good color stability, it offers an impressive solution, particu-larly for exterior paints and renders. Other benefits included improved rheology and excellent processing characteristics. The new product is therefore an ideal binder for a range of applications: From pure dis-persion paints, through silicone resin emulsion paints to silicate paints, or alternatively for the topcoat of energy-saving external ther-mal insulation composite systems (ETICS). VINNAPAS®LL 3019 thus offers an ideal and inexpensive alternative to high-quality sty-rene-acrylate and acrylate dispersions.

The new dispersion is produced without the use of formaldehyde do-nors or alkylphenolethoxylates (APEO) and does not require film-forming agents or cosolvents. It thus allows paints to be formulated with a low content of volatile organic compounds (VOC < 1 g/l) and is therefore also outstanding for the production of solvent-free, low-emission, matt interior paints and interior plasters.

Cyclodextrins as Environmentally Friendly Processing Auxiliaries

Another highlight at ECS 2013 is WACKER’s cyclodextrin technology for the paints and coatings industry. Cyclodextrins form a cavity in the center of their ring-shaped structure which can accommodate other, predominantly hydrophobic substances to form "host-guest com-plexes." This allows them to absorb and transport substances or pro-tect sensitive molecules, stabilize interfaces and selectively improve the properties of polymer systems.

These advantages open up many new applications for cyclodextrins in functional systems – they can be used as process auxiliaries during polymerization, as additives for phase-transfer catalysis or for reac-tion control in the copolymerization of highly hydrophobic monomers. By complexing the aromatic and aliphatic groups of polymer chains, cyclodextrins can selectively influence polymer systems, for example by modifying their weight or influencing their thermal sensitivity. As performance additives, cyclodextrins improve the water solubility without the need to add organic solvents. And as rheology control additives, they selectively modify the flow properties of paints and coatings, and can be used together with, for example, associative thickeners to improve the viscosity of the end product.

Bioengineered from renewable, plant-based raw materials, cyclodex-trins thus offer a sustainable, innovative and environmentally friendly alternative for many applications in the paints and coatings industry.
