Munich, November 27, 2012 – The Munich-based WACKER Group has developed a new, aqueous silicone fluid emulsion for rendering mineral and glass wool hydrophobic. Available under the SILRES® BS 5137 trademark, the new product is significantly less viscous than its predecessor. As a result, it not only has better processing and spreading properties, but also performs more efficiently. SILRES® BS 5137 can be combined with phenolic resin binders, which are frequently used for making insulation materials. Because silicone fluid emulsions can generate considerable hydrophobicity, they are extraordinarily well-suited as hydrophobizing agents in mineral-based insulation, where they provide long-term protection from moisture.

SILRES® BS 5137 is a silicone fluid emulsion developed from WACKER’s tried-and-tested SILRES® BS 5136 water repellent. The active component of both products is a reactive polydimethylsiloxane that has proven extraordinarily successful for lasting impregnation of mineral wool. Compared with its predecessor, though, SILRES® BS 5137 possesses a superior emulsifier system that stabilizes the finely dispersed emulsion without making it hydrophilic or too viscous. In practice, the emulsion is 90 percent less viscous than the previous additive.

This property offers numerous advantages to manufacturers of mineral-wool products. The new additive enables them to treat insulation materials more quickly and reliably and, ultimately, more economically. Manufacturers can empty drums more easily and feed the water repellent within their plants faster and with less effort. Moreover, the product’s relatively low viscosity facilitates mixing and diluting, making for a consistent production process.

Its high, 50 percent active content, its stable active-ingredient distribution, and its excellent phenolic resin compatibility make SILRES® BS 5137 a highly efficient water repellent. Compared with the dry weight of the finished mineral wool, it is sufficient to add 0.1 to 0.2 wt.% to render mineral-wool insulation materials hydrophobic. The reactive groups of the silicone molecules bind the silicone securely to the fiber surface, enabling lasting hydrophobicity. In this way, high-performance insulation materials retain their low thermal conductivity over the long term.

Used primarily in construction as thermal insulation, mineral-wool products consist of mineral fibers held together with binders to form mats or boards. Their insulating properties are the result of countless air-filled cavities between the individual fibers. As with all thermal insulation materials, mineral wool needs to be dry for optimum insulation. Because damp mats lose their insulating properties, mineral wool needs be made hydrophobic. With SILRES® BS 5137, mineral wool stays dry and thermally insulating over the long term – even if moisture eventually reaches a building’s insulation or if insulation materials are exposed to rain, either during transport or construction. Together with the binder and other additives, the emulsion (diluted in water) is sprayed onto the molten mineral that has just been spun into fibers.

SILRES®  – Silicone Products for Masonry Protection

WACKER has bundled its silicone masonry-protection products into its SILRES® BS line. Based on water-repellent silanes, silicone fluids, silicone resins and aqueous silicone emulsions, this entire product line primarily makes construction materials water repellent, protecting them from moisture and thus from long-term damage.

Silicones bond firmly to mineral surfaces, forming an extraordinarily stable, long-lasting silicone network that is water repellent yet still permeable to water vapor. In construction, silicones protect numerous mineral materials – ranging from facades, masonry, bricks and roof tiles to concrete, thermal insulation and gypsum products. Modern silicone resin emulsion paints also make use of the hydrophobic, water-repellent properties of silicone resins.
