Munich, October 27, 2010 – WACKER, the Munich-based chemical group, will be introducing an innovative silicone gel with flexible processing alternatives at the 18th International Trade Fair for Plastics and Rubber (K 2010) in Düsseldorf, Germany. Marketed as SilGel® 613, this novelty targets electronic assembly manufacturers. With its enhanced flow properties, encapsulation of electronic components is much faster and more economical. SilGel® 613 can be cured either in an oven or with UV radiation at room temperature. The latter option permits curing within seconds, making for highly efficient process control. K 2010 will take place from October 27 to November 3.

The ever-growing number of electronic automotive components, such as microchip-based control systems, require protection against high-frequency vibrations, moisture, corrosion and thermomechanical stress. This is suitably performed with a polymer. Experts favor WACKER’s SilGel® 612 for such purposes. The silicone gel has proved its worth as an encapsulant that provides electronic compo-nents with effective protection not only in cars, but also in solar cells, sensors, high-power rectifiers and optoelectronic applications.

SilGel® 613 takes these properties a stage further. It was designed to give customers a silicone gel with processing properties that are as versatile as possible. For instance, SilGel® 613 has a viscosity of 200 mPa s compared to SilGel® 612’s 1,000 mPa s, thus exhibiting greatly enhanced flow behavior. This benefits processors by vastly speeding up processing. For example, SilGel® 613 can be extruded (dispensed or applied) six times faster than conventional products.

A further advantage is the improved mixing ratio of this silicone gel type (comprising two components: A and B ). Compared to SilGel ® 612’s 1:1 mixing ratio, SilGel® 613 offers 10:1. Modifying the ratio in this way makes mixing simpler and more thorough, which can be verified by analyses using nuclear magnetic resonance.

Modular System Simplifies Processing

The product’s modular design offers customers two curing options. The first is "conventional" oven-curing. The second is to use a UV-catalyzed product, which is flash-cured by UV light in a matter of seconds at room temperature, drastically reducing production-process cycle times.

Such flexible process control underscores the high quality offered by WACKER’s SilGel® 613 silicone gel, since customers can define their own gel time. For example, a gel time of about 120 minutes is achiev-ed with a platinum catalyst at 25 °C and of approx. 10 minutes in an oven at 70 °C. In contrast, gel time is less than 2 minutes at room temperature in the presence of UV radiation and a UV catalyst. For customers, the main advantage of switching from the oven process to´the UV option is extremely fast curing. The end product’s properties remain constant, despite the change in curing process.
