German university pioneers Sectra’s visualization table in anatomical teaching
The Philipps-Universität Marburg, Germany, has invested in the Sectra Visualization Table. This makes Marburg the first German university to improve its medical teaching with Sectra’s table.
The visualization table at Marburg University will be used by students in anatomy classes as a complement to dissection exercises. Humans are as different on the inside as on the outside, and the ability to demonstrate normal and abnormal anatomical variations by studying multiple cases is of great importance while developing an institution’s curriculum for anatomy and pathology education.
“When I first saw the Visualization Table at the Center for Medical Image Science and Visualization in Linköping, I immediately realized that we would be able to improve the anatomical training with this innovative product,” says, Professor Weihe. “Virtual dissection will give our students important theoretical and practical insights and they will be much better prepared for their first real body autopsy than before.”
The Sectra Visualization Table is a large, multi-touch medical display with software that facilitates interaction with 3D images of the human body created by modern computer tomography or magnetic resonance cameras. Students are able to intuitively zoom in, rotate or cut into the visualized body without using a scalpel or destroying the subject. This means that the same image can be used repeatedly, and the students are able to study the impact of various illnesses on the anatomy in a manner that was not possible in teaching in the past. The opportunity to interact with virtual bodies provides better understanding for the body’s anatomy and functions, which in turn will contribute to better educated medical personnel and thus higher efficiency and safety in healthcare in the long-term.
A unique feature in the visualization table is that each university can download and create its own teaching files from its own clinical practice as well as using the preloaded collection of demonstration cases that comes with the table. Marburg University foresees to create an extensive collection of medical cases by using this feature.
