First export order for a secure telephone: Norwegian Armed Forces orders Sectra Tiger The Norwegian Armed Forces today ordered Sectra's secure GSM telephone, the Tiger. The order is worth a total of SEK 40 million. Sectra Tiger is the first telephone in the world to meet the highest demands for telephone security and has potential to become a major international product. This is the first order to a NATO country for the Sectra Tiger. It is now three years ago since Sectra, in the face of tough competition, was selected to develop a secure GSM telephone. The order was placed by the Swedish Defence Materials Administration. The first Swedish batch orders for a total of 600 telephones valued at SEK 20 million were made in summer this year. Today's order requires that Tiger must be adapted to meet Norwegian Armed Forces specifications and the rules applying within NATO. Following the 18- month development and adaptation project, the Norwegian Armed Forces have the option of batch delivery of the telephones. " The Chief of Defence Norway / Security Staff (CHOD/Sec) considers that the GSM crypto telephone will contribute to improved security of voice, data and fax communications from permanent locations, home offices, vehicles, and at meetings, domestic and abroad, via existing communications infrastructures, " says Jan Erik Larsen, Brigadier, Chief CHOD/Sec in Norway. "Sectra is awarded the contract due to the company's crypto competence, and its proven ability to integrate crypto and GSM technology. Sectra and the Norwegian defence have, during the last 4 years, exchanged crypto methodology and technology. The company has established basic knowledge of Norwegian requirements. CHOD/Sec is looking forward to a challenging and rewarding co- operation, " concludes Brigadier Jan Erik Larsen. "This is our first export order for Sectra Tiger. We are convinced that this telephone will become a major export product," says Sectra Communications Managing Vice President, Per Unell. The immediate next step is to present Sectra Tiger at the world's largest telecom exhibition in Geneva on October 10-17. Sectra Tiger has been developed in co-operation with experts from the Swedish Armed Forces and is the first GSM telephone in the world to meet the market's highest demands for secure communication. The Tiger system provides secure communication of voice, data and SMS services. Furthermore, Sectra Tiger offers a level of flexibility, functionality and accessibility that corresponds to today's modern cellular telephones.
