First order for secure civilian GSM phone: Saab Dynamics chooses Sectra Tiger Sectra has signed an agreement with Saab Dynamics for the use of Sectra's secure GSM phone Tiger. This is Sectra's first order for the Tiger from a non-military customer. At Telecom '99 in Geneva, Switzerland, in October, Sectra introduced a version of its Tiger cell phone for civilian users, targeting international companies and organizations as well as government agencies such as the police and customs. Saab Dynamics develops and manufactures technologically sophisticated defense products, including military missile systems and optoelectronic targeting and tracking systems. The company is set to become the first non-military customer for Sectra Tiger. "For a defense contractor like us, being able to guarantee secure communication between key personnel enables us to make our operations more effective," says Anders Andersson, president of Saab Dynamics. "This agreement is our first, important step into the non-military market," says Sectra Communications vice president, Per Unell. "Saab Dynamics is an extremely security-conscious company that makes tough demands." Sectra Tiger was originally developed for military use. Swedish Defense has purchased 600 telephones so far, and in September the first export order was received, from the Norwegian armed forces. Sectra Tiger is the first GSM telephone in the world to satisfy the most stringent requirements in the market for secure communication. The telephone guarantees secure communication throughout the "connection," from transmitter to receiver, for voice and data transfer as well as SMS text messaging. It is secure at the office, in the home, or in a car. The phone accesses existing GSM networks and can be used regardless of the service provider or intervening carrier networks. Sectra Tiger integrates encryption and GSM technologies, making it user friendly. The telephone is the same size as today's modern cellular phones and is just as flexible, functional, and accessible.
