Sectra develops international NATO Tiger Sectra has signed a new agreement with the Norwegian Armed Forces covering development of the Tiger eavesdrop-secure GSM telephone. The agreement means that the national Norwegian version, which is now under development, will be extended to a full international NATO version. Consequently, it will be possible to sell Tiger to other forces and authorities within NATO. "The new agreement with the Norwegian Armed Forces is strategically important for us since it opens the way for sales to the armed forces and authorities in the other NATO countries", says Per Unell, President of Sectra Communications AB. "It is a pleasure for us that we have concluded this deal after a long period of negotiations". When the Norwegian Armed Forces contracted for the development of Tiger in 1999, the intention was to develop a national Norwegian version, designed specifically for the Norwegian Armed Forces. In order to pave the way for a broader market, the development was adapted also to the rules that apply in NATO. Therefore, the new agreement only results in minor extensions in the development project and series-level prototypes of NATO versions are expected to be ready for delivery this summer. The international NATO Tiger will be marketed and sold by Sectra's cooperation partner, the Norwegian defense industry enterprise Kongsberg Defence Communications AS. "We see a significant potential for NATO approved eavesdrop secure mobile telephony throughout the NATO countries and in NATO", says Torunn Øvreås, Vice President of Kongsberg Defence Communications AS. "An important aspect is that the management of the NATO Tiger is designed to offer secure interoperability between different countries for instance in Crisis Response Operations. Together with our other NATO approved systems such as our IP Crypto system, marketing and sales of NATO Tiger is of strategically importance". The agreement confirms Sectra's leading position as a supplier of eavesdrop-secure systems to the world's most demanding customers. The first Tiger telephone was developed in cooperation with experts within Sweden's Armed Forces. There is also an international civilian version directed toward companies and authorities outside the defense sector. The Tiger guarantees secure communication all the way from transmitter to receiver, for voice as well as data transmission and SMS services. The telephone integrates cryptography and GSM technology, making it the most secure GSM telephone on the market.
