Sectra introduces IDS4/ortho, A PACS workstation tailor made for orthopedists. PACS vendor Sectra Imtec AB of Sweden has released its new clinical workstation IDS4/ortho. For the first time since PACS was introduced into the medical market the orthopedist can actually perform his duties completely without films. Now the prosthesis template may be superimposed onto the X-ray image on the workstation, and specific methods for measurements have been implemented. All the leading manufacturers of prostheses provide digital templates. In addition, the system also offers the ability to scan and label templates. Sectra IDS4/ortho has been used in clinical evaluation for some time in the film free hospital of Visby and the hospital of Kalmar. "At first we were unprepared for the change from conventional to film free radiology. ", says Dr Åke Karlbom, head of the orthopedics department at Visby Hospital. "Now Sectra has listened to our needs and provided us with a workstation that has the specific functionality that orthopedic work requires. No doubt that the workstation saves valuable time." "To be able to improve our offer we aim to really understand the needs of our customer's customer. The orthopedic departments are those who are the most dependent on radiological images within a hospital. We have invested a great deal of time and effort in understanding their specific needs. We find it striking that what began as a solution to a problem in radiology, has resulted in an entirely new product. We think the orthopedic SW module is just the beginning of a very exiting development into the future of orthopedics." says Dr Torbjörn Kronander, president of Sectra Imtec IDS4/ortho has been shown at RSNA earlier as work in progress but will now, for the first time, be shown as a released product at the ECR conference. The orthopedic module is available as of today in Europe and will be available in the US and the rest of the world later this spring, when it will be released on Sectra's new IDS5 workstation platform. IDS4/Ortho will be sold in the US market by Sectra's long term partner Philips Medical Systems.
