Sectra receives crypo-modem order from the Swedish Defense to increase mobile-data security Sectra has received an order for development of crypto-modem from the Swedish Defense Materiel Administration. Crypto-modem will enable both stationary and portable computers to link up with the Defense´s communications networks in a completely eavesdrop-secure manner . The value of the order is slightly more than USD 0.7 million. Sectra has already developed equipment for encrypting communications between computers with fixed connections to the Swedish Defense´s telecom and datacommunications networks. For the encryption of communications via GSM networks, Sectra, in cooperation with experts in the Swedish Defense, has also developed the eavesdrop-secure GSM telephone Sectra TigerTM. This time, the Swedish Defense ask for a flexible security solution that simultaneously ensures security for communications from and to portable computers in the Defense´s own and other networks. "The development of crypto-modem is a project, in which we can contribute to the security of the Defense´s datacommunications in the face of today's considerable range of different communications networks," says Per Unell, President of Sectra Communications AB. "For several years, providing equipment that ensures the security of the Swedish Defense´s communications has accounted for a substantial portion of our business. We view this latest order as proof of the Swedish Defense´s confidence in our ability to develop unique security products." By connecting computers via crypto-modem, communications traffic toward external networks is secured, at the same time as the computers are protected from external intrusion. Data transmission will be secure, assuming that both the sender and the recipient are equipped with a crypto-modem. This data-security solution permits major flexibility in terms of the choice of network. Crypto-modem will be able to handle communications via the Swedish Defense´s and regular telecommunications networks, GSM networks, as well as via such high-speed data networks as ISDN. Crypto-modem will also be prepared for communications via the broadband networks of the future.
