Sectra Receives Order for New Air Traffic Control System Sectra Wireless Technologies AB, in conjunction with C.N.S. Systems AB, has received orders from the Swedish Board of Civil Aviation for the next generation of air traffic control systems. The Board of Civil Aviation will be able to offer airlines increased traffic capacity in the air. The two companies will be developing and supplying transponders jointly to meet an order valued at SEK 20 million. The transponders form the foundation of the new air-traffic control system based on the new international standards for international air traffic, VDL Mode 4, which is expected to be approved by the ICAO, an international agency of the United Nations for civil-aviation. The Swedish Board of Civil Aviation has had a leading role in developing the new standards, working in cooperation with international civil- aviation authorities. It is the first time European authorities have managed to get standards approved in the field of commercial air travel. "This breakthrough makes it possible for Swedish and European industries to work together with European civil-aviation authorities to offer airlines the opportunity to solve such problems as the delays that so often affecting commercial air traffic," says Bo Redeborn, Manager Air Traffic Management at the Board of Civil Aviation. "We will be among the first in the world to supply transponders under the new standards. This order is strategically critical, putting us in a new, highly favorable position for the future in the enormous market for transponder systems for air traffic," says Dick Ollas, president of Sectra Wireless Technologies AB. ICAO stands for International Civil Aviation Organization. Transponder is automatic radio receiver and transmitter. VDL Mode 4 is based on Håkan Lans's patent and is expected to be approved as the international standard by the ICAO. The Board of Civil Aviation is the Swedish air traffic authority. It administers fourteen public airports and is responsible for civil aviation at five military airports. They are also responsible for the air traffic control in Sweden.
