Sectra security partner in satellite project The Swedish IT and medical technology company Sectra has received its first space assignment in the global navigation project Galileo. Sectra has been named a security partner in the first specification phase of the project and the order involves review of the system's security architecture. The order value amounts to about SEK 2 millon. Galileo will be Europe's own satellite navigation system, a project initiated by the European Commission and the European Space Agency (ESA). "With the knowledge we have accumulated in communications security during our many years of cooperation with defense in the EU and NATO, as the security partner in this first review phase we can contribute to ensuring that Galileo fulfills the high security requirements established," says Tommy Waszkiewicz, President of Sectra Communications AB. Project tendering is divided into phases and the first phase extends through July 2004. Sectra is a supplier to Galileo Industries, a consortium comprising Alcatel Space, Alena Spazio SpA, Astrium GmbH, Astrium Ltd., GSS (Galileo Sistemas y Servicios) and the Thales Group. Galileo Galileo is an European independent satellite navigation system under civil control and will be operational around the clock. With Galileo, users will be able to pinpoint their own position or the position of any other stationary or moving object (such as vehicles, boats and aircraft) aided by a small receiver. The system is intended for users in a wide range of sectors such as transportation, police, customs and the rescue services as well as by recreational users. The first experimental satellite will be launched during the latter part of 2004. The completed Galileo system will comprise 30 satellites, including three reserve satellites.
