Sectra sells more Tiger telephones to Sweden's Armed Forces The Swedish IT and telecom company Sectra has received a repeat order from the Swedish Defense Materiel Administration for its eavesdrop-secure GSM telephone Tiger. The order value is approximately USD 1 million and covers 300 telephones and accessories. "It is highly pleasing that the Swedish Defense have elected to expand the use of Sectra Tiger," says Per Unell, President of Sectra Communications AB. "They have now ordered a total of 1,200 telephones." The Sectra Tiger guarantees secure communications all the way from transmitter to receiver, for voice as well as data transmission and SMS services. The telephone integrates cryptography and GSM technology, making it the world's most secure GSM phone. The Tiger system operates with a standard subscription in the public GSM network. In addition, through use of the fixed telenet, the telephone can be used in locations not reached by a GSM net. The Tiger is presently available in three versions. The first is produced for military use in cooperation with experts within the Swedish Defense. The second is a national Norwegian version, which is adapted specifically for the Norwegian Armed Forces and the regulations applied within NATO. The third is an international commercial version directed toward companies and organizations as well as the police, customs and other government authorities. International marketing and sales of the Tiger are conducted in cooperation with the Norwegian defense industry company Kongsberg Defence Communications AS. Current eavesdropping debate in Norway fuels interest in the Tiger "We have noted an increase in demand for secure communication solutions on the part of companies and authorities which handle sensitive information since the disclosure in late December by the Norwegian media of the risks associated with the forwarding confidential information via the GSM network," says Per Unell. At that time, the Norwegian Police detected the use of eavesdropping equipment for the first time. The owner disclosed that such equipment had already been sold to seven individuals, two of whom are Norwegian businessmen. The risk of industrial espionage was such that Attorney- General Hanne Harlem and the mobile telephone operators Netcom and Telenor instituted measures including a public warning to ministers and international industry organizations with respect to the transmission of confidential and sensitive information via GSM telephones. "Events in Norway demonstrate the large potential for our eavesdrop- secure Tiger. Our commercial version of the Tiger is presently being used by several international companies and has also been sold to the United State European Command (USEUCOM), a US Defense Department unified command," concludes Per Unell.
