Swedish hospital uses tomorrow's advanced X-ray system today At Visby Hospital, on Gotland, Sweden, the Swedish company Sectra is expanding and upgrading a digital image management system, that is, a film-free X-ray department. Deployment of the upgrade and expansion is the first stage of a four-year contract for digital radiology (PACS). The total value of the order is about SEK 11 million. "There's no doubt that we made the right move when we gave up X-ray film in 1994/95 in favor of computer technology. Despite fewer staff and expanded activity in the form of new diagnostic methods, such as computed tomography and magnetic resonance tomography, we have no waiting time," says Mats-Ola Rödén, previously project manager and head of planning at Visby Hospital. "The expansion just deployed will allow us to continue on the course we have set by further enhancing service and efficiency." "With this upgrade, we are changing to Windows NT clients and expanding our archive capacity as well as raising the level of service to our clients," says Dr. Staffan Jennerholm, head physician at Visby's X-ray department. "A larger number of sophisticated workstations for image review are being set-up in departments where there is a great need to access X-ray images. Other units referring patients gain access to the X-ray images via an intranet bridge connected to the system. The end result is more efficient and better patient care."
