The energy company Fortum has chosen Semcon to upgrade its electricity and control equipment at its hydroelectric power stations in Landafors (Ljusnan) and Viksjöfors (Voxnan) in the county of Gävleborg.

The assignments include new designs, testing and commissioning complete control systems at the power stations. Besides the new design of both plants, there will be supplies of new equipment such as generator switchgear, low-voltage switchgear, battery systems, magnetisations, remote control equipment etc.

“The purpose of the renovations at Landafors and Viksjöfors hydroelectric power stations is to ensure safe and effective operations in the future,” says Torgny Backlund, Area Manager at Fortum.

“Hydroelectric power is important to us in many ways,” Torgny continues. “It’s renewable and doesn’t produce any emissions to the atmosphere, water tables or land. Hydroelectric power is also the only climate-neutral energy source that we can use to rapidly regulate the balance in the electricity network, which is something that will be more important with the increasing amount of wind power.”

The projects will employ a number of electric power and automation engineers.

“Work on both projects will start immediately and we’ll be delivering by summer 2012. Both hydroelectric power stations will receive an upgrade of the entire electrical system and control equipment. This will include new station computers, plant computers, turbine regulators, magnetisations and remote control for operation centres,” explains Göran Urby, head of Hydro Power Services at Semcon’s office in Karlstad.
