New Store on Same Site of Historic Main Store Built in 1940s

San Jose, Calif., May 28, 2014 -- First established in Santa Clara Valley 83 years ago, home and garden retailer Orchard Supply Hardware is strengthening its roots with the opening of a brand new flagship store in Midtown San Jose. The new store, located at 377 Royal Avenue (at San Carlos Street), is on the same site as Orchard’s historic main store which opened in 1946.

Orchard will celebrate the transformation of the storied property with a neighborhood Open House Celebration on May 31 at 6:30 a.m., featuring honored guest Mayor Chuck Reed, live music and giveaways. Orchard president Richard Maltsbarger and store manager Rich Coombs will present a $2,000 donation to the nonprofit Garden2Table as part of Orchard’s Neighbors Helping Neighbors initiative.

Garden2Table is committed to creating a sustainable, local food system that builds community, improves access to healthy food, and teaches residents to cultivate their own fruits and vegetables. With an amazing staff and stellar volunteers, Garden2Table has transformed a vacant lot in Central San Jose into a one-acre farm that aims to make fresh produce accessible to local families and by offering classes that benefit the broader community.

“We’ve been part of San Jose’s history since 1931 when the Santa Clara Valley was carpeted with fragrant plum, apricot, and cherry orchards,” said Maltsbarger. “Today our historic San Jose-Midtown store is in the heart of Silicon Valley. While the driving forces of our economy have changed, our values and legendary customer service have not.”

Orchard Supply Hardware was founded by thirty farmers, mostly prune growers, who formed a cooperative to buy farming supplies. This year, the company is investing over $40 million in creating the next era for Orchard.

The new San Jose-Midtown store is37,000 square feet in size with an additional 12,000 square foot nursery. It was constructed from the ground up, reflecting the innovative design and layout that is the new Orchard.

The redesigned stores feature a distinctive new interior look, which is warm, functional and colorful. The San Jose-Midtown store is built around a shopper-friendly concept featuring wide aisles, attractive signs in just the right places, and improved lighting, setting it apart from big box warehouses and smaller specialty stores.

“The new layout helps our customers find items quickly,” said San Jose-Midtown store manager Rich Coombs. “We also have a new service center area called the Workbench, where we help with basic hardware needs such as tool and knife sharpening, rescreening, and pipe threading. We also cut pipe, conduit, chain, cable or rope to the customer’s specifications.”

Additionally, an expanded paint department highlights Orchard’s high quality Benjamin Moore™ paint selection. A spacious indoor/outdoor nursery and garden supply area caters directly to Midtown with its mix of historic neighborhoods and new multi-family residences.
