News Release

8th October 2013

A chartered accountant has reached an important milestone having calculated his way to a top position in a career that spans more than four decades.

James Green (58) is celebrating 40 years of service at Duncan & Toplis. Having joined in 1973 as an articled clerk, he went on to open the firm’s Melton Mowbray office in 1985, was made a partner three years later and has been there ever since.

Leaving school aged 18, James entered a profession quite different from today’s. Instead of computers and calculators, he recalls staff using analysis machines and manual ledgers.

“Technology was far less advanced: we had no computers, no internet, no fax machines. Everything was done on paper or with old devices like mechanical adding machines,” said James.

“Some of the early accounts I prepared were still in pounds, shillings and pence. This was before the introduction of VAT and some of the practice bills were raised to clients in guineas.

James, who also enjoys charitable work as a member of the Melton Mowbray Rotary Club, said job satisfaction was what he enjoyed most about working at Duncan & Toplis.

“Dealing with the clients at our Melton office is a pleasure,” he said. Advising and guiding, in particular, can be especially rewarding.”

James was joined by Duncan & Toplis partners and directors at Langar Hall near Nottingham for a celebratory lunch where he was presented with an award by Managing Partner Adrian Reynolds.

“The firm prides itself on maintaining employee satisfaction and the fact that James has spent such a long period of his life working at Duncan & Toplis is testament to our success in this area,”  he said.

“We congratulate James on completing 40 years at Duncan & Toplis and wish him many more happy years with the firm.”
