Ex-Salvadori Connaught race car makes the Classic Sale grid
Perhaps the most beautiful and evocative British Grand Prix car ever - a 1953 Connaught AL10 - raced by the recently deceased Roy Salvadori will be offered for sale by Silverstone Auctions on 21st July.
This historic car has also been driven in period by John Coombs, Kenneth McAlpine, Ron Flockhart and Bill Whitehouse and promises to be one of the highlights at the Silverstone Classic Sale when it goes under the hammer.
“This Connaught is the epitome of British race car design and engineering. It oozes style and class, coupled with a racing pedigree that is second-to-none. Its sale represents an opportunity not to be missed for any serious enthusiast, collector or investor,” said Nick Whale, managing director, Silverstone Auctions.
The car comes complete with FIA papers and VSCC passport and has been raced throughout Europe including the European Historic Grand Prix at Luxembourg, Monza, Spa, Nurburgring, and Paul Ricard among others. It has also made regular appearances in the support race at the British Grand Prix, and at Goodwood.
And if its illustrious past wasn’t enough then it has also featured on the front cover of Motorsport magazine in its special millennium edition when it tested a Grand Prix race car from each of the decades starting from 1950s up to 2000.
Adding to its allure is a recently finished two-year restoration by renowned specialists Hi-Tech Motor Sport and Pride Racing Engineering who rebuilt and tested the engine on a dyno which has not been raced since.
The car also comes with a large, valuable spares package, including a spare engine (the original fitment), a spare gearbox, a complete set of its electrolyte wheels, a complete set of drop down gears and uniquely, all of the original patterns, including the cylinder block casting mould which is believed to have been completely restored by Alan Cotham in the 1980s.
The Silverstone Classic Sale takes place on 21st July at the home of British motorsport during the Silverstone Classic weekend, the world’s biggest classic motor racing festival. In addition to the Connaught, there will be a wide variety of classic cars, modern supercars, competition cars and automobillia on offer.
